ONION RIVER BIKES GO TO TWO LUCKY UES STUDENTS! What a great story this is! And it says so much about the generosity of our community!

Earlier this week, our own MJ Jennings (also an occasional Onion River employee) came to let me know that a local woman had won an Onion River bike in a raffle. Not needing a new bike, she approached the OR staff to let them know she'd like to donate the bike to a worthy UES student! Wow! Moved by this generous spirit, the OR folks decided to donate another bike of their own! So... the decision was made to randomly select one lucky student from the 3rd and 4th grades for this incredible Holiday treat! Here is MJ with one of the Onion River guys picking the lucky two kiddos:

Who's it going to be??

And here are the lucky two UES students, 4th Grader Bethany Brush and 3rd Grader Ari Jorgenson, being presented their brand new beautiful bikes this morning! Thank you Onion River, and thank you to the mystery woman whose generous spirit was not lost on any of us!

UES FOOD DRIVE A HUGE SUCCESS! Speaking of generous spirits, UES set a goal K-4 to gather 800 non-perishable food items for our annual Holiday Food Drive. Well, as expected, our students (and all of you) stepped up in a big way and far surpassed our goal in the first few days! Mrs. Giffin let me know that she lost count when the number went way over 1200 items! The children delivered all the items to the Food Bank in the pouring rain yesterday to the grateful staff. Here are Mrs. Mello's kinders checking out our progress late last week (note the maxed out thermometer!):

COMMUNITY FORUM, JANUARY 27! Our ongoing series, "The Future of School," will be continuing with our third forum of the year on the evening of January 27. The focus of this session will be on "Proficiency Based Learning" and how we assess the learning of our students PreK to grade 12. We will gather in the MHS Library from 6:00 to 8:00 with a quick pizza dinner starting at 5:30. We really hope to see you there!

UPP FUNDRAISER, FEBRUARY 13! If you haven't done so already, mark your calendars! The "Give it UPP!" Auction Gala Event is on Saturday, February 13 from 6:30 to 11:00 at the Vermont College of Fine Arts Alumni Hall! Tickets are now available at Capitol Stationers or online at eventbrite.com; buy them early -- $22 a ticket (or $40 for two) until January 15!  We will have more details about the Gala right after the vacation, but we're very excited about the items local businesses and artisans have donated to the cause!

BURTON SNOWBOARDS VISITS UES! First graders got a special treat when Burton Snowboard instructors visited UES as guest PE teachers! Students got to learn the basics of snowboarding from the pros! Just another awesome day in the Union Elementary Phys. Ed program!

Learning the basics!

Mr. Williams, MJ, Mr. Hennessey and the Burton Crew
AUDITORIUM UPGRADES! I'm sure many of you have noticed the deteriorating ceiling in our auditorium. Or, perhaps, you've noticed chunks of plaster falling upon you during one of our performances! Fun! The good news is that at long last our ceiling is being both repaired and given a fresh coat of paint! We hope to have this first phase of an auditorium "freshening up" done before we return from the break. Progress! Here is Mr. Keller supervising the action:

DECEMBER CARES ASSEMBLY! For the first time ever at UES, a 3rd grade class ran one of our assemblies, and they did a terrific job entertaining and inspiring the UES community. A big "Hennessey Hoot" to Mrs. Pine's "Pineers" (could there be a better class to demonstrate RESPONSIBILITY??) for their outstanding efforts!

A well-rehearsed skit demonstrating RESPONSIBILITY
Grace and some beautiful cookies share the stage!
COLD WEATHER PRACTICES/PROCEDURES It's hard to believe now, but the cold weather will get here eventually! The faculty and staff of UES strongly believe that our children need as much time as possible running and playing outside, even during the cold of our Vermont winters. For our students to enjoy this time on the playground, it's essential that they come to school with adequate snow gear to keep them warm and dry. There are certain mornings and days, however, where it really isn't safe to be outside no matter what they're wearing due to extreme conditions. The procedures we follow are straightforward and in general practice around the state: if the temperature (with wind chill) is at 0 degrees or above, we'll be going outside. On cold days, we monitor the local conditions very closely at this weather site:

Local AccuWeather Forecast

This is an excellent site, and it will take you directly to the conditions and forecast for Loomis St. here in Montpelier! You can't get much more local than that! Again, please make sure your child comes to school prepared for the conditions, and please let me know if you have any questions. If you need assistance getting appropriate gear for your child, let Mrs. Giffin (ext. 8230) know about it right away; we have quite a supply of gear on hand here at UES!

"Have You Seen the Owl Today?"

Happy Thanksgiving! All of us at Union Elementary wish you and your families a peaceful, restful, and well-deserved five days together!

We have had a very busy November at Union Elementary, and, incredibly, I have another teacher honor to share with you...

VTAHPERD RISING STAR! Congratulations to our own MJ Jennings for being selected as the 2016 Vermont Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance Rising Star! The Rising Star Award recognizes an outstanding beginning Physical Education teacher who "demonstrates great commitment and promise towards the promotion of teaching wellness and physical activity." MJ was chosen by her peers from around the state, and all of us in the UES Community could not agree more with their choice!

MJ accepting her Rising Star Award
Here is another picture of MJ, but in action. Out of the blue, I heard some commotion in the cafeteria the other day (imagine that!). I head down the hall to check out what's going on, and what do I see but an epic Flash Mob with our third graders entertaining everyone with a surprise performance! Just another day in the UES PE program! Folks, we are so fortunate to have MJ and Mr. Williams!

VERMONT TEACHER OF THE YEAR CEREMONY! Last week's ceremony honoring the work of Susan Koch was a perfect example of how the UES community works together so beautifully! A special Hennessey Hoot to Samantha Funk for organizing the show and putting together the wonderful musical performances by our children, and to Todd Keller and his crew for making sure everything went smoothly (and it did!). Yes, the new gym floor was shiny, but our school and our children had the biggest opportunity to shine, and did they ever!

Former UES mom Jen Matthews was hoping to have an opportunity to give a brief speech, but time didn't allow it. Instead, I share her remarks here:

"Susan,

I would like to say thank you as a parent.  As a kindergarten teacher not only are you teaching our children many things beyond academics but you are also an ambassador for parents.  You are the face of the school and help set the tone for success.  I was nervous to relinquish control of my children to school but your calm demeanor, clear expectations and enthusiasm made it easier.

During my children’s tenure, I learned so many things from you: how to see strengths in every child, the fine art of redirection, and the concept of thinking versus knowing.  We share the same enthusiasm for ECO.  I am thrilled to see its continued success here at UES because of your support.

You have been my children’s teacher, my teacher and mentor but I am so glad to call you my friend.

Congratulations on this wonderful honor!"

Another Hennessey Hoot has to go to local musician Susan Picking and teacher Emily Wrigley for coordinating the children's beautiful musical tribute to Susan, and I share the lyrics and a fine recording of the song with you all below:

MRS. KOCH
Joy shows in the smile she wears
We feel how much she cares

Mrs. Picking shared a great story with me the other day:  "I was sitting with the first graders and enjoyed some fo the first grade analysis of the assembly.  My favorite of the day came from Clover who is in Mrs. Bates' class.  Clover shared numerous times, 'This is really putting us on the map, and the floors have never looked so good!'"  Clover is so right!

Here are some pictures from the big day:

THANKSGIVING LUNCHEON  Speaking of teamwork and community spirit, how many of you got to enjoy an early Thanksgiving feast at UES last week? What a great day that was! Thanks to the efforts of cafeteria supervisor Nancy Webb and her staff, Todd Keller and his crew, administrative assistants Zephyr Cerulli and Pam Foster, and so many more, we were able to serve over 750 students, parents, and staff on that busy Wednesday! I burned so many calories serving folks that day that I ate not one, not two, but three pieces of pie! (4th grader Chase Erlich was my witness!). Thanks to all of you for joining us -- it's one of our favorite days of the year!

WALKING SCHOOL BUS The UES Walking School Bus Wednesdays are continuing through the winter! Yes, even on the coldest of days! Come join us at Shaw's, the State House, or the college green at 8:00 sharp each Wednesday. We hope to see you! A Hennessey Hoot to MJ, Sarah Mele, Samantha Funk, Emmanuel Williams, and Sylvia Fagin for joining me in keeping the "bus rolling." It's a terrific way to start the day.

Check out the college green crew from a few weeks ago:

VETERANS DAY PARADE  In a month of many highlights, we have to mention the honor of participating in this year's Montpelier Veterans Day Parade. Another Hennessey Hoot to teachers Samantha Funk and Sharon Pine for their organizational efforts and enthusiasm in planning this event. It's safe to say that our veterans greatly appreciated our presence! I'd also like to thanks MHS principal Mike McGraith and MSMS principal Pam Arnold for encouraging their students to join the audience on a cold, rainy day. It was such a joy to march through town with all our students cheering us on! Here are some pictures from this special day:

UNION ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DIRECTORY UES mom Ashley Roy is putting together the annual UES Student/Parent Directory, and we need your help! Please go to the link below if you'd like to have your family included. You can put as much or as little information as you feel comfortable including. The Directory was always a popular item in my house when our girls were at UES! Here is the link:

BOOK FAIR A SUCCESS! Thanks to UES moms Heidi Groff and Bianca Magiera for coordinating and organizing the 2015 Scholastic Book Fair at UES! This is not an easy task, and by all accounts, it was a smashing success! The crew:

OLYMPIAN ANDY NEWELL VISITS UES! 4th graders were treated to a visit from U.S. Olympic skier Andy Newell earlier in the month, and they weren't disappointed! WPTZ joined us to tell the story, and you can see their coverage on the link here:

Hard to read (!), but here is the Times-Argus story:

UPP UPDATES! The biggest November Hennessey Hoot of all is reserved for our own Theresa Giffin, whose tireless efforts on behalf of the Union Playground Project continue to amaze. Here is the latest update from Theresa:

"This has been a very busy and exciting fall for the UPP committee!

First off, we have signed the last form in order to receive our $150,000 matching grant (which makes it worth up to $300,00!!!!).  We plan to use many different forms of media to publicize this major step forward.

The timing couldn't be better in that our next step is to go out into the community to promote a major fundraiser that will be happening on February 13.  A notice about this went home a few weeks ago, and more information will be going home with students next week.  Please mark your calendars to join the GIve It UPP Gala which will be a concert, mixer, and live and silent auction.  We hope to have as many as 500 people attend!  More info to come, but make sure to pencil in the date on your calendar.  Please let me know if you would like to make a contribution to the silent auction (an item, a craft, your talent, etc.).

Secondly, many of you might have noticed our UVM Landscape Design students here a couple of times in the past two months.  On December 7 and 9, they will be presenting their designs at UVM to members of the UPP committee!  Then on December 10, Stephanie Hurley, who is the professor for this course (and a future UES mom), will be hosting a community Open House to view this work.  Our plan is to find a space whereby the display may remain up throughout the next day so that every class may view the designs and state their favorite designs.

We are also now in the process of hiring a Project Manager to oversee the extensive process of planning and construction.  Please let me know if you would like to be on the search committee.  This would involve a few meetings in January.  Our goal is to have someone selected by early February.

It is amazing to see a dream close to being a reality!!!"

Thanks for reading, everyone!  The Batmen (look closely) and Estherline say, "Have a safe holiday!"

"Have You Seen the Owl Today?"

Happy late October! Union Elementary has enjoyed a pretty extraordinary month of accolades for our teachers, and the kudos keep coming! Here is the latest...

University of Vermont Outstanding Teacher!  Dr. Ricca and I had the pleasure of joining 2nd grade teacher Mary Catherine Reed last week at the University of Vermont as teachers from around the state were honored for their teaching excellence! If you know Mrs. Reed, you'll understand why so many of her peers nominated her for this honor. I was certainly honored to join her! One thing I've notice with both Mrs. Reed and Mrs. Koch these last few weeks is how quick both of them are to share these honors with their teammates and colleagues. They're right -- UES has an outstanding faculty! Our children are so fortunate to have them, aren't they?

Mrs. Reed accepting her Outstanding Teacher honor
HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Halloween is coming this Saturday, and it's time to be thinking about how we'll approach this special day as a school community.  As much fun as it would be to celebrate with costumes and parties, we believe that such revelry would be simply too disruptive to the learning environment for an entire day.  We ask that students keep the costumes and candy at home so they can be ready for the fun on Saturday night.  Please help us maintain a healthy learning environment the following days as well; we ask that all candy remain at home when the children return to school on Monday.  If you have any questions or concerns, please call me or stop by.

On a more fun note, many children know that I have a very close friendship with Batman (it's true!), and I know for certain that he'll be spending Halloween night at my house in the meadow neighborhood!  As always, all superheroes who stop by will get two treats!  Have lots of fun and be safe -- we hope to see you all!

Finally, we just got word from the good folks at Montpelier Alive! that there are big plans for Halloween in downtown Montpelier on Saturday!  I will definitely see you there!  Here are the details:

LOST AND FOUND Anyone who has been in the Kinder hallway of UES in recent weeks will notice that we have a growing collection of high quality jackets, sweatshirts, and other items that haven't made it safely home. In the past we have always kept these items in the auditorium for months at a time in the hopes that children and parents would claim them. Storage has become an issue, however, and we figure that if we have a deadline, people are much more likely to claim their lost items! So... on Friday, November 6, all unclaimed items will be donated to Planet Aid. Every two weeks thereafter, the lost and found will be cleared and all items will be donated. Now is the time to check with your child to see if he or she is missing something. There are some really nice things on those racks, so please check them out!

Parent/Teacher Conferences ...are scheduled for next Thursday and Friday, November 5 and 6. There will be no school on both days. If you haven't scheduled a conference with your child's teacher yet, now is the time to do so!

HENNESSEY'S HOOTS: A Hennessey Hoot to:

* ... Mrs. Pine's 3rd Grade "Pineers" for their continued community spirit and great sense of volunteerism! Last week, I joined the Pineers as they raked for one of our Loomis Street neighbors (Mrs. Jasmine) who needed some help with all of those leaves. Here are some great pictures of the raking action:

*  ... and, finally, to Mrs. Koch once again for the incredible honor of being selected as the 2016 Vermont Teacher of the Year!  A reminder to please "save the date" for Tuesday, November 17 as the day that she will be honored here at Union.  I will share details on this event as soon as I have them!

There have been numerous articles and news profiles related to Susan's work in the local media recently.  If you'd like to learn more about Susan's teaching and why she was selected for this honor, go here (both of these profiles are excellent and well worth your time!):

Last but not least, I added this picture late to the last Owl, and I wanted you all to have a chance to see it...

"Have You Seen the Owl Today?"

Welcome to a special edition of the Wise Owl, which is coming out this afternoon because of some very big news for Union Elementary! "What news?", you say? Well, take a look at this...

Vermont Teacher of the Year! I have a very special announcement to make this afternoon: UES First Grade Teacher Susan Koch has just been announced as the 2016 Vermont Teacher of the Year!

We have known for a number of weeks that Mrs. Koch was a finalist for this prestigious honor, and it was just today that Dr. Ricca and I joined Susan at Hartford High School for the official announcement that she was the top candidate. What a special day for Susan, her students, and the whole UES community!

And the celebrations and kudos are just beginning! Among many other things, Susan can look forward to a special assembly here at Union on Tuesday, November 17 where she will be presented with her award -- all are welcome to attend, and we'll have more details about this ceremony as the date gets closer. Finally, Susan will join other Teacher of the Year candidates from the other 49 states at a special reception this spring at the White House where she'll get to meet President Obama! Wow! It can't be possible that any of these other 49 teachers are as talented and student-centered as Mrs. Koch, right? We should all be so proud and happy for her -- this honor is so richly deserved. Here is an action shot from moments ago when Susan was officially announced as the top candidate:

Secretary Rebecca Holcombe, Dr. Ricca, Mrs. Koch, and Mr. Hennessey

Finally, here is a link to the Vermont Agency of Education site that gives more details on the TOY program:

A few other "Hoot-Worthy" Announcements:

Parent/Teacher Conferences ...are scheduled for Thursday and Friday, November 5 and 6. There will be no school on both days. If you haven't scheduled a conference with your child's teacher yet, now is the time to do so!

Walking School Bus Tomorrow! Don't forget... the Walking School Bus leaves tomorrow morning from Shaw's, the State House steps, and the college green at 8:00 sharp. We hope to see you all there!

Have You Seen the Gym? If you haven't visited the UES gym yet this year, you will be amazed the next time you do! For the first time in the 75 plus year history of our school, the gym floor was sanded, repainted, and resurfaced this summer! Many decades of wax and dirt had accumulated to the point that the floor was almost un-cleanable. Well, that isn't the case any more! It looks beautiful, and our gym is finally worthy of the outstanding Physical Education program MJ and Mr. Williams put in place for our children every day. You'll also notice that the damaged tiles on the surface of the walls (that were 50+ years old) have been replaced by beautiful light green and gold acoustic panels that not only make the gym look better, but sound better too! A big kudos and Hennessey Hoot is due to Todd Keller and the crew for getting these panels up in the middle of the busy, busy school year. We expect the gym to be completely done by early November. If you can't stop by, take a look at this great photo to see the progress that we've made:

Shiny and clean at last!
Giant Pumpkin Visits UES! Once again, a big thank you is due to UES granddad Kevin Companion for sharing his gigantic, champion pumpkin with the children of UES! This year, Mr. Companion outdid himself by growing a pumpkin that weighed in at, get this, 1,332 pounds!! Here is Mrs. Slesar's class being overwhelmed by the awesome hugeness of this big orange monster:

Um, I think he's gonna need a bigger truck...
UPP News For those who don't know, the Union Playground Project (UPP) is alive and well!  There are a lot of great things going on -- here are a few updates:

I'd like to share a few action shots of some parent and community volunteers who came in at the end of the summer to spruce up our lower playground by putting in two straight twelve hour days the weekend before school started. Thanks are due to UES moms Terry Holloway and Jenny Sheehan for planning and organizing this event. Their dedication was (and remains) truly extraordinary! Check it out:

UES dad Gary Holloway using elbow grease to get the bricks looking as they should.
Chainsaw artist extraordinaire and UES mom Billie Quittner
Kindergartener Winter says, "Mr. Hennessey, can I have the keys?  Please?  What could go wrong?"
UES dad Gampo Wickenheiser shows off his wood working skills.
Nothing better than a shirtless test drive!

While all of this work was going on earlier in the year, the fundraising for UPP continues strong! I'd like to give you all an important "Save the Date": on Saturday, February 13 UPP will be holding a "Give it UPP!" gala fundraiser event that will feature cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and dancing! More details on the event are forthcoming, but we wanted to make sure you all had the date in your calendars.

Meanwhile, future UES mom and UVM professor Stephanie Hurley had her landscape design class pay a visit to the playground last week, and they have agreed to take on the design of our new playgrounds as a class project! You may have noticed more than twenty college students with clipboards walking around the property taking notes last week, and we can all expect to see more of these folks throughout the fall.

That's it for now -- I'll have more UPP updates in each future edition of the Wise Owl!

Hennessey's Hoots! 4th graders are the leaders of UES now, and here are two examples of their leadership. A Hennessey Hoot goes to ...

* 4th grader Bethany Brush, who has entered a beginner's cooking contest with Uncle Ben's Rice and could win $30,000 for UES!  All winnings would go specifically to kitchen upgrades at the school.  It's a social media contest so please click on this link and vote for Bethany!  You are able to vote once per day - please support her and UES!

*  4th graders Girija and Yolanda for taking the lead on the UES compost program every day!  I joined our first graders for lunch yesterday, and I got to see these girls in action -- sheparding 80+ young children through the multiple steps of finishing lunch and composting isn't an easy task for anyone, and they were calm, organized, and industrious.  Thank you Girija and Yolanda!

Still smiling... even at the end of lunch!
