"Have You Seen the Owl Today?"

Welcome to the Union Elementary Wise Owl!  We hope that you enjoy this new way of learning what's going on at UES!

PARENTS GROUP FUNDRAISER UPDATE:  The deadline for the UES Parents Group Fundraiser is this Monday, October 7.  Please get your materials in as soon as you can!

GIVE A HOOT, DON'T POLLUTE!  Despite the efforts of Ms. Pines' class and others, we're still finding too much litter on the playground during the day!  Please talk to your children/students about the importance of taking care of our space.

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES  Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, October 14 and 15.  There will be no school for students those days.  There will be more information on scheduling appointments for the conferences later in the  week.

LIBRARY BOOK CHAT!  Check out these terrific pictures of a "book chat" in the library the other day, where Ms. Parker's math FIT class finds various ways to quantify a million...

MATH PUZZLER!  Look for these puzzlers every day in the Owl!  How many can you solve?

A woman has seven daughters, and each daughter has a brother. How many children does the woman have?

Tuesday's puzzler: Caroline owns a kennel with 4 pens to house the dogs. Today she has 9 pups. She puts them in the 4 pens in such a way that each pen holds an odd number of dogs. How are the pens arranged so that this is possible? (Answer: there would be 3 pens, with 3 dogs each inside the 4th larger pen!)

RIDDLE OF THE DAY

What is round on both sides, but high in the middle?

Tuesday's riddle:  They come out at night without being called, and are lost in the day without being stolen.  What are they?  (Answer:  stars!)

Did You Know?  ... that panda bears could be RED?  Check out this great video on the National Geographic Kid Link and learn about Farley the red panda!

"Have You Seen the Owl Today?"

Welcome to the Union Elementary Wise Owl!  We hope that you enjoy this new way of learning what's going on at UES!

YESTERDAY'S FIRE DRILL  We had an unexpected Fire Drill yesterday afternoon when one of our electricians accidentally set off the alarm.  The good news is that we did an even better job getting out of the building quickly and safely than we did for our drill last week!  Great job everyone!

PICTURE DAY  Picture Day 2013 was a big success!  Thanks to Pam and Zephyr for putting together a perfect schedule and to the Lifetouch photographers for taking pictures of over 500 people in a friendly and professional manner.  If you didn't have your picture taken, Makeup Day will be in early November.

OPEN HOUSE 2013!  Our Open House last night was a also a big success!  The halls and classrooms were filled with smiling children and their families.  Thanks to all for attending!

THANK YOU!  Hasn't it been nice to have the dumpsters away from the pickup area?  And now, finally, the construction trailer has been moved, freeing up all that extra space on the playground!  Once they were gone, however, there was a big mess left behind.  Someone needed to come to the rescue...

Thank you to Ms. Pines' class for all their hard work cleaning up the playground!
They collected 294 pieces of litter just on the pavement alone!

Please remind your class to be Responsible for making sure litter goes into the garbage cans.

A Few Thoughts From Mr. Hennessey on Wednesday's Board Meeting...  "As the new principal of Union, I found my first Board Meeting with all of you to be a very rich, positive, and rewarding experience!  I was incredibly impressed with the civilized and respectful discourse on these substantive issues that will have real impact on all of our children.  A move to MSMS for our fifth graders and the creation of a foreign language program are big issues with highly complex ramifications for all.  We’re going to have to do our homework! As I said at the end of the evening, I have full confidence that our board, administrative team, faculty, and community will take this work seriously and do it well."

OPEN HOUSE 2013!  Open House for grades 1 to 5 will be on the evening of this Thursday, September 26 from 6:15 to 7:15.  Our Open House will be an opportunity for families to join their children in your classrooms and share their work with each other.  Families will also have an opportunity to join their children in their Integrated Arts classes and meet Counselors and Special Educators throughout the evening.  The evening will officially begin at 6:15, but families are welcome to come and go at any time within the 6:15 to 7:15 hour. Wayne the Stegosaurus

Meet the stegosaurus, Wayne.
He doesn’t have the biggest brain.
He’s long and heavy, wide and tall,
but has a brain that’s extra small.
He’s not the brightest dinosaur.
He thinks that one plus one is four.
He can’t remember up from down.
He thinks the sky is chocolate brown.
He wears his bow tie on his tail
and likes to eat the daily mail.
When playing hide-and-seek he tries
to hide by covering his eyes.
He thinks that black is really white.
He’s sure the sun comes out at night.
He thinks that water grows on trees
and when it’s hot he starts to freeze.
He’s happy when he’s feeling ill.
He likes to dance by standing still.
And when it’s time to go to bed,
he puts bananas on his head.
He thinks his name is Bob, not Wayne,
but that’s what happens when your brain
(although you’re big and brave and spiny)
is very, very, very tiny.
–Kenn Nesbitt
